We have a Windows 7 32 bit machine that is having trouble accepting new passwords domain password. The new password and old password both have special characters, admittedly the new one multiple special characters and some repeating.

However the password works fine when logging into OWA. In trying to set the password back to the users old password, again it will not accept the old password now either when attempting to log in. We notice what did work was a non-complex password without numbers or special characters.

I have tried typing this password into the username field just to see if it’s typing it correctly and it is. I also looked at intl. The other thing is it appears correctly when the user types the password into Word. Now here is the weird part. We also have this user set to the same password on our web-based database.

When typing it in IE9 it also does not take the new password. However, if the user types it and pastes it from Word into the password field – voila! It works. Not sure what to make of that. One thing I do notice on this machine that is different is the Offline File Sync icon that seems to be running when I am logging in as this person. Could this contribute to problems with changing a domain password?

This is a desktop, so it does not even need offline files. That is correct. If you do a local login you load a different profile from the one you see when you do a domain login.

The first time you log into the domain the machine builds your domain profile, just a it builds your default profile the first time you log on to the PC. The new password must meet the following minimum requirements: 1. The password is at least six characters long.

The password contains characters from three of the following four categories: 3. English uppercase characters from A through Z 4. English lowercase characters from a through z 5.

Base 10 digits from 0 through 9 6. Non-alphanumeric characters for example:! I suspect your keyboard cannot transmit certain characters, and that is the reason Windows did not recognize the password. You may connect a new keyboard for a test. I also suspect this issue is caused by asynchronous clock on this machine or cached credentials. Log on as Local Admin. Create a new Domain account and try to log on this machine.

Blair Deng. TechNet Community Support. Also wanted to mention that I notice that on this PC, there are two folders for this person’s profile. The jdoe. I don’t see this occur on any of our other PC’s for a login. In fact the jdoe folder is more in-line with what I see when anyone else logs in on a pc on the network.

Perhaps this is a clue or could contribute to this issue? Office Office Exchange Server. Not an IT pro? Windows Client. Sign in. United States English. Ask a question. Quick access. Any ideas of what else to check would be appreciated. Thursday, October 3, PM. Tuesday, October 8, PM. Also make sure there are NO hidden chracters. Make sure to cut and paste from something like Notepad, which helps avoid special characters. The only reason it takes it from Word and not IE is that there are different values being used, even though you dont realize it.

Word and other programs often include non-visible, non-printing characters. No magic is involved – the computer only knows the passwords being presented in the two cases are different – one is correct and the other is not. Wednesday, October 9, AM. You may temporary disable the firewall and check the result. You may also make sure the date and time are correct.
